Bariatric Surgery Improves Arthritis – Article by Dr Sunil Sharma MD – Best Bariatric Surgeon Jacksonville Florida
All the obesity related symptoms such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and cardiovascular diseases can be controlled through bariatric surgery. A new study suggests that weight loss due to bariatric procedure also helps improve arthritis symptoms and mobility.
The chance of developing arthritis becomes dominant with increased body mass index (BMI). Weight loss is typically the starting point to reduce the pain in arthritis without medicine. But if the patient has pain with less mobility, it is difficult to maintain the initial weight loss over a long period of time.
Arthritis was one of the main problems that showed improvement with weight loss after surgery. In a study, patients having BMI of 40kg/m2 or less before surgery were more likely to reduce their weight to 30kg/m2 or less one year after the procedure.
After studying the records of 27,320 patients undergoing bariatric surgery in hospitals within the Michigan collaborative between June 2006 and May 2015, it was observed that one yer after the surgery, patients’ mean BMI was reduced from 48kg/m2 to 33kg/m2. Arthritis was one of the major problems that showed improvement after the bariatric surgery, indicative of the fact that weight loss has a positive effect.
